Digital Bangladesh

Digital Bangladesh is now the most pronounced phrase in our country. The word ‘digital’ is the adjective for ‘digit’ meaning a number which describes information, music, an image, etc that is recorded or broadcast using computer technology. As computer technology works with ‘O’ and ‘I’, it is called so. ‘O’ means an absence of electricity and ‘I’ means ‘on’ or the presence of electricity. It is not an easy task to transform Bangladesh into a digitalized country. A number of problems stand in the way. Ours is a poor country and most of the people are illiterate. In order to digitalize the country we have to develop the infrastructure. Corruption is the hardest nut to crack. Above all, most people do not have a clear idea of the term. In short, digitalization means making all utility services accessible to the mass people through computers or the internet to ensure accountability and transparency.

Digital Bangladesh Composition for HSC Exams

Bangladesh is resounding with the target of achieving digital Bangladesh. On the election days, Awami League, one of the major political parties, first declared “Vision 2021” with the aim to develop Bangladesh into a digital country by the decade. A digital country means all the activities of governance, commerce, education, agriculture etc. will be powered by computers and the internet. The landslide victory of the Awami League in the last election has given the new government of Sheikh Hasina the enormous task of meeting people’s aspirations.

Broadly speaking, a digital society ensures an ICT-driven knowledge-based society where information will be readily available online and where all possible tasks of the government, semi-government and also private spheres will process using modern technology. So a digital Bangladesh must guarantee efficient and effective use of modern ICT in all spheres of society with a view to establishing good governance.

But in the field of ICT, our only grand success lies in Mobile telecommunication. However, in the other spheres of ICT, our achievement is very insignificant and we are still far away from transforming ourselves into a knowledge-based society.

Building a strong ICT infrastructure is the prerequisite for making Bangladesh a digital one. For this, we need to focus on the following relevant issues assessing the harsh reality that hinders our development in this context.

  1. Power supply: For proper ICT development an uninterrupted power supply is a must. Considering the country’s future energy security, the government has given due importance to renewable energy, energy efficiency as well as energy conservation.
  2. Network infrastructure: Outside Dhaka, at present, a few computer network infrastructures have been developed so far. Apart from some educational institutes outside Dhaka, observation finds that most of the LAN setups are Dhaka-centric. This observation reveals the reality of the digital gap even within the country.
  3. Use of the Internet: For ICT development Internet users in the country must be increased. The latest statistics revealed that Internet penetration in our country is only 0.3% whereas, in Pakistan and India, it is 7.3% and 5.3% respectively.
  4. English Literacy rate: In the arena of ICT, English has become the lingua-Franca. Unfortunately, the English literacy rate is very poor in our country.

For making a digital Bangladesh by 2021, the government must address the above-stated issues effectively and efficiently in a transparent manner. Moreover, the journey towards a digital Bangladesh needs the incorporation of the technologically solvent innovative younger generation. If the leaders of our country objectively guide this generation, they can do wonders for the nation.
